Elisa Alaluusua is a visual artist working with paper and video. Her practice explores boundaries and belonging be that in between locations – like the two places she calls home, the village of Luusua in Finnish Lapland and London – or materials and techniques. She draws constant inspiration from these distinct surroundings, in many ways opposite to one another, and finds herself testing her own limits in her practice. In Alaluusua’s large-scale durational drawings the continuity of line and movement meet in the repetitive motion during the act of drawing opening an internal dialogue where experiences over time – past and present – blend to one another and bring up haptic memories. Alaluusua has been exhibiting internationally since the 1990s and has curated several international events. She was awarded the prestigious first prize at Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize 2022 with her video drawing and received the second prize in Jerwood Drawing Prize 2015.
